Kathleen Harder, PhD, is Director, Center for Design in Health, University of Minnesota, and Director of Graduate Studies, Human Factors Program, University of Minnesota. In her research program, Dr. Harder investigates problems in health care delivery and employs deep cognitive systems design to improve human performance and facilitate safe, effective, and efficient patient care. For more than 15 years she has applied her expertise in human behavior and human-centered systems design to guide users toward desired behaviors in health care delivery. Her work has been implemented with excellent outcomes in a variety of health care contexts across the United States.
After conducting an extensive analysis of surgical procedures in perioperative services in eight Minnesota hospital facilities, she developed the Safe Surgery Process to prevent wrong-patient, wrong-procedure, and wrong-site surgery. The Safe Surgery Process is designed to foster the active cognitive engagement of all team members, making the process more rigorous, reliable, and effective so that surgery patients receive the correct procedure at the correct site. In 2009, the Joint Commission approved the Safe Surgery Process as an alternate universal protocol in the State of Minnesota. Since that time, this system has been implemented in many hospitals in Minnesota and other states and is currently undergoing implementation at other hospitals on the East Coast.
Dr. Harder has conducted extensive systems analyses and generated recommendations to improve care delivery with a variety of different processes including heparin administration, blood transfusion process and policy, preventing unintentionally retained foreign objects following surgery, handling of surgical specimens, and systems issues surrounding administering medications to patients. From a medical device standpoint, she has led a comprehensive analysis of four IV pumps, including usability testing with front line nurses, to inform the purchasing decision of a large health care organization.
She has also conducted extensive analyses of the functionality of electronic medical records systems and has, among other things, worked closely with a large health care organization to design electronic orders for blood transfusions. The focus of this work has been on systematically analyzing and redesigning orders and clinical documentation to complement the needs of health care practitioners, to ease their workflow rather than hinder it.
